Wintergreen and Sweet Birch oil are nearly identical in chemical composition and aroma; similarly, both were used in traditional folk remedies by the aboriginal peoples of North America. Because wintergreen oil naturally has a sweet and fresh scent and smell, very similar to that of peppermint oil, it has a wide variety of uses in foods, teas, aromatherapy, household and beauty products.
Wintergreen is also known as eastern teaberry, checkerberry or gaultheria oil. The oil has longed been used by indigenous North American peoples to help treat fatigue, lung, sinus and respiratory illnesses. Wintergreen oil is a natural antioxidant, lowering inflammation and reducing pain.
Wintergreen essential oil is typically used to:
- Fight inflammation
- Relieve pain
- Reduce swelling and irritation
- Improve digestion

Simply put - we are not doctors, and are therefore not able to make recommendations for treating specific conditions and this includes route of administration of any oil. Essential oils are concentrated distillates of the essence of the plant - like medicine, some are good in small amounts but can be dangerous in large amounts, particularly for small children, pregnant women or the elderly. It is our position that anyone who intends to take essential oils internally should only do so under supervision of their family doctor.
